The Juvenile Library contains a diverse
collection of books under the following categories: Fiction, Bible Stories,
History, Holidays and Shabbat, Sports, Humor, Mysteries, Easy Books,
Biographies, Holocaust, Sci-Fi, and Books for Older Children; some of these
are suitable for adult reading as well. Our library also contains video
cassettes and audio tapes; and catalogs and sources for large print books.
Using the library is a required part of
the religious school curriculum, as are scheduled book reports throughout
the year. Additionally, teachers use the library for resource purposes such
as pictorial items and other information to enhance their teaching skills.
Special library programs have included Read-a-Thons for the benefit of
the Jewish Braille Institute of America. Over the years we have also
participated in Book Review contests on the school, local, and national
levels. The local competition usually occurs during the Reading Jewish
Community Center Book Fair Week. Additionally, one of our students won a
prize at the national level.
The library is subsidized mainly by
donations to the Joseph M. Ravitz Library Fund. For more information
about contributing to the library, please visit Make a Donation. Joseph M. Ravitz was a
former teacher and principle of the religious school. Donations may be made
"in memory of," "in honor of," with "wishes for a
speedy recovery," as general donations, or through an allocation by
Sisterhood. Books of Jewish content are gladly accepted. Just mail or bring
them to the synagogue.
Visit the library! See what we have to offer, browse, and make
suggestions to improve and enhance the library and to suggest new titles to
purchase. The library is open Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
during the Hebrew
School year.
Remember to expose your children to Jewish books
early –
before they start religious school –
and encourage your older children to read Jewish titles as well!
